Malai Malai - Tamil Movie Review

Genre: Action/Drama

Cast: Arun Vijay, Vedhika, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Kasthuri, Santhanam, Kanja Karuppu

Plot: Tit for Tat

Positives: Rapid fast screenplay, Arun Vijay's impressive performance!!

Negatives: Same old story!!

Review:

Arun Vijay is a village simpleton, stays in a village near pazhani. He is a van driver by profession. His brother is prabhu. Both the brothers are like pasamalar sivaji & savithri :). They love and care for each other. As usual, the elder brother prabhu does not want to get married, because he has to take of his younger brother Arun. They both together fight with every other rowdies in the village. Their favorite time pass is to participate in village games like stick fight, bull fight or beating the comedian kanja karuppu :)

Vedhika comes to the village and she gets impressed with Arun Vijay's fighting skills and helping nature. Arun and Vedhika fall in love and vedhika returns back to Chennai. Arun follows vedhika to chennai to convey his love and get married to her. Arun meets prakash raj, when he comes to Chennai. Vedhika meanwhile becomes a radio jockey in chennai.

Prakash (Esakki), is a gangster in chennai and he aspires to become member of legislative assembly a.k.a MLA (like every other villian in tamil movies who always wants to become a minister). However, Arun knocks off Prakash raj in the procession march accidentally. So, Prakash raj's ambition of becoming MLA gets shattered. He wants to kill Arun Vijay and his girl friend Vedhika. The rest of the movie revolves around how Arun vijay beats up prakash raj and gets married to Vedhika.

Kasthuri gets re-introduced after a long time. She falls in love with Prabhu during one of the stick fights prabhu participates. She has nothing much to perform and does her sidekick role well. She sacrifices her life, in the process of saving Prabhu from Prakash Raj. Vijay kumar comes as a police office and has nothing to perform either.

The comedy by Santhanam, Kanja Karuppu, Lollu Sabha Manohar, Aarthi steal the show. The timely comedy dialoges especially the background mind songs between this comedy pair is very hilarious. You have to watch it to laugh. Overall, this movie is for the mass audience (B & C centers) & a good time pass. Forget about the logic, when you see arun fly like spider man or batman wearing the village dothi. The screenplay keeps the movie going rapid fast.

The unnecessary friendship tag between prakash raj and prabhu could have been clipped. It just drags the story a bit. The songs in the movie are below average, which is a big let down.

Modhi Vilayadu - Tamil Movie Review

Genre: Romance/Drama

Cast: Vinay, Yuva, Kajal, Santhanam, Kalabhavan Mani

Plot: Family Business

Positives: Vinay & Kajal's impressive acting, Santhanam's comedy

Negatives: Not much logic

Review:

This was one of the movie, i was reluctant to watch after reading reviews from other sites. However, after watching movies like kanthasamy (proclaimed as super hit by some sites) and Eesa, i thought why not i give a try to watch this movie!! It was not disappointing in the end. This movie is different from the other revenge plot movies most of us have recently seen. The story is somewhat new and Kajal agarwal's comical acting is pretty impressive.

Kalabhavan mani is a multibillionaire (same like reliance ambani i guess). His son is vinay. They have a house maid boy yuva. Kalabhavan mani, thinks of himself like Richard Gere from pretty woman. He buys all other small businesses around him and dismantles them. He creates a monopoly around him, so that no one competes with him. In the due process, he creates good number of enemies. What's really baffling is Kalabhavan mani's attitude. He talks like someone from slum and ill treats all his employees, including the CEO of the company.

Vinay has a happy time in lavishly spending his father's money along with his house maid yuva. They both travel places, dance and have great party all day. They even have a chinese cook and a security guy with strange tattoos all over his head. Kalabhavan mani's enemies try to kill vinay and pay bribe to the chinese cook, who puts arsenic in the food. However vinay survives.

Vinay meets Kajal during one of his fancy road drives in his ferrari. Kajal throws a coke can onto Vinay and causes a road accident to Vinay's ferrari. Vinay hires Kajal as yet another house maid to pay for a compensation of 3 lakhs towards damages to his Ferrari. They fall in love in due course as usual (its romance scenes are neatly taken!! Good job by the director). Meanwhile, the house maid servant Yuva also falls in love with Kajal, which Kalabhavan mani approves. The disappointed Vinay drags Yuva to visit Kajal. Kalabhavan mani's enemies aim to shoot vinay and they end up in killing Yuva.

Once Yuva gets killed, the suspense reveals. Vinay loses all his privliges including his fancy cars, house and credit cards. He cannot even get to see Kalabhavan mani. Vinay joins hands with Kochin Haneefa, Kajal and Santhanam to uncover the mystery and establishes himself as the hier for Kalabhavan Mani's wealth.

All the actors in the movie have put in credible performance. Kudos to the director for pulling in a youthful story (though not much logic). Santhanam's comedy is watchable, especially the one he comes like Arya in Naan Kadavul. Mayilsami's comedy as Kajals' boyfriend is funny as well. Overall, this movie is a nice time pass!! Good to watch with friends & family!! Go for it and have a great weekend!!

Punchline Dialogue in the movie -
Vinay - I am like a street dog!! I will come back and fight again & again!!
Kalabhavan Mani - I am like a dog's tail!! I will never change myself :)

Hat's off to whoever wrote the punchline dialogue !! LoL

Kanthasamy - Tamil Movie Review

Genre: Fiction/Fantasy/Drama

Cast: 'Chiyan' Vikram, Shreya, Vadivelu, Prabhu

Plot: Social Theme

Positives: Devi Sri Prasad's Music, Thotta Tharani's settings, Vikram's vocal skills!!

Negatives: Every thing else & an extremely dragging storyline!!

Review:

How would you call a movie, which a kindergarten kid creates after watching Gentleman, Anniyan, Sivaji? Nothing but kanthasamy!! Its a colossal waste of time, money (both for audience & producer) and talent (vikram). I can't believe what director Susi Ganesan was thinking in his mind while drafting the story & screen play for this movie. Susi was so brilliant in his past ventures like virumbigiren, five star & thiruttu payale (Five Star is his best). But in kanthasamy, he seems to have ventured in a territory (action movies), which is not his cup of tea.

The producer kalaipuli thanu must have drained lots of money for this movie, considering the fact that the movie was in production for so long. (Well, its the producer's call anyways, as he had to make up for this disappointing performance by calling press meets).

Coming to the story, the movie starts with a robin hood like sequence. An old lady prays to God to save her husband (for medical expenses). The priest asks her to write her request in a letter and tie it to the temple tree (The priest is a part of vikram's robin hood gang). The letter gets to vikram and he sends her the money for her husband's surgery. The honest lady hands the money to the corrupt inspector (mansur ali khan) & viola our super hero vikram appers in a cock like costume (inspired from batman). He beats the heck of the corrupt cop and the cop hands over the money to the lady for her husband's treatment.

The hero kanthasamy (vikram) is a IPS officer working in CBI/Vigilance. He has a group of folks (childhood friends working in all goverment agencies in various law enforcement departments) helping him in finding out who are all the corrupt rich men having lots of black money. The chief director of CBI/Vigilance is also a part of this gang :) For a moment i thought every tom, dick and harry in the movie is part of Vikram's secret gang, except for the villian, Prabhu (CBI Officer) and Vadivelu (Comedian) lol!!

One such raids is against Aashish Vidyarthi. Vikram freezes all the known assets of Aashish and as usual (both in movies and in real life), the bad guy gets a stroke. Aashish's daughter is Subbu lakshmi (Shreya). Shreya wants to take revenge on vikram for making her dad get stroke. On one such attempts, they corner vikram to say the truth. Aashish sends his guys dressed as CBI officers and they try to have a rapist criminal try to rape Shreya. Vikram confesses. The lengthy first half nearly had 3 fight sequences, 3 songs etc, etc. I thought the movie is almost reaching the climax now.

Then comes the dragging second half. Aashish demands 1/2 of vikram's earnings so far, for not leaking vikram's true identity to CBI. Vikram says, he has an assignment in Mexico, the earning of which will provide Aashish the money he wants. Aashish arranges for a forged passport for vikram to travel to mexico. Shreya accompanies vikram to mexico and falls in love with him.

In between, there is a second villian (this guy was the bad cop in pokkiri). Vikram slaps him with his left hand once and he wants vikram's left hand desperately for revenge. Aashish joins hands with this 2nd villian and trys to kill vikram in Mexico. But, vikram does all heroic stunts in mexico and escapes. He also tricks aashish vidyarthi for the amount he promised to provide to him and in addition takes all his money as well. Aashish becomes dummy now and the 2nd villian takes charge.

The 2nd villian is a industrialist and his favorite pass time is to hang out in a huge bus with all luxury items in it. He gets all booze, chicks, movies, briyani etc etc inside this bus. What a creative imagination by the director :) The hero kandasamy(vikram) finally breaks the villian's bus using a sledge hammer in the climax and tells the villian to adapt some villages as a social message.

It was refreshing to see vikram after a long time in the screen. Kandasamy kept the expectations very high for all vikram fans. But unfortunately, its worse than his previous movie Bheema! Its a big failure on all aspects like story(??), screen play, comedy track (Vadivelu's comedy track is like beating round the bush)!! The only positives are Vikram's stylishness, Shreyas' cuteness, Devi Sri Prasad's music and Thotta Tharani's sets!!

Its highly not recommended to watch this movie in theaters as you cannot fast forward the streching scenes and the loooong movie (3 hours and above) drags you the doorstep of the theater!! Best is to watch it in a DVD at you leisure!! You can be your own editor of the movie and make it rapid fast :)

Eesa - Tamil Movie Review

Genre: Horror

Cast: Vignesh, Lakshana, MS Baskar

Plot: Revenge

Positives: Vignesh, Lakshana

Negatives: Violent, Same old story!! Nothing New!!

Review:

Vignesh (a.k.a) sudalesan is an orphan works in a salt production plant owned by some big landlords, called "Annachi". All these Annaachi(s) do all day is booze, have fun with village girls and beat the heck out of the people in village. They also in between lease land to folks like vignesh to make salt. During the day time our Annaachi(s) [There are 3 annachi's in this movie, unfortunately neither of them have a name :)] roam in the village markets dance, sell salt, fish and pearl.

Vignesh works in the salt production unit in the day and in the night happily boozes and eats food in the Graveyard (wonder what the director is trying to convey here, by making the hero have food in the graveyard on top of dead bodies..). One such day, our hero's friend says he is bored of eating parota/salna (South Indian Curry) and asks the hero to get married to lakshana.

Lakshana is the step daughter of some old lady in the village, who grows her just to make money out of her. The old lady even tries to sell her daughter for money and is against her marriage. Vignesh falls in love with lakshana and one fine day they get married.

Meanwhile, one of the annachi (the big annachi) gets into fight with a government official and kills him in the village forest near the salt unit. Lakshna who happens to be the witness of this murder gets killed by all 3 Annachi(s).

As usual, the hero finds out who killed his dear wife and goes and kills one annachi after the other and kills all the 3 annachi(s). He also in the process kills all annachi's sidekicks and good number of police men. The climax of the movie is the killing of the final annachi and the hero getting shot by the cop.

Vignesh has put in some splendid performance as eesa in this movie. He has strained himself to act in all types of nonsense scenes, the director has asked him to act (If vignesh has thought, he is going to get fame like vikram in pithamagan, unfortunately he must be stupid to think so). There is nothing new about the story and the screen play drags. The director seems to have lost the plot weather to show more violence or love and eventually chooses the brutal route. I guess he wanted to have a blend of a movie like Pithamagan and Naan Kadavul together (inspired by Bala). But, the story is wafer thin and no message to convey.

Coming to the comedy track, it so pathetic. MS Basker & Co have put in a useless comedy track which makes the movie even more boring.

Overall, the movie is a watch, only for Vignesh and some casual acting by lakshana. Not worth to watch in theaters, unless you are totally bored of life :)
